How Much Does a Roller Blind Cost?
The short answer is, it depends!
The average cost of a roller blind can vary based on multiple different factors. Everything from the hardware, the blind fabric, the quantity and the size can affect the price.
It’s important to look at your budget alongside what you’re hoping to achieve and look at the cost in relation to this.
For example, if you’re looking to achieve full blackout then this will cost slightly more than a standard roller. Upgrading to motorised control will also be more expensive than a basic chain operation.
One of the main cost factors when it comes to roller blinds is whether you buy a ready-made, a made to measure or completely bespoke system.
Ready-made Roller Blinds
A ready-made blind is what you will typically see from a high-street retailer or smaller online store. These blinds will come in a range of preset sizes and you would typically purchase the one closest to the size of your window. From there, you usually have the ability to trim the blind to fit. The issue with this is that it’s unlikely that the blind will ever fit perfectly, and if you’ve not had much practise then trimming a roller blind to size can be tricky.
Ready-made blinds tend to have fewer customisation options than you would get from a bespoke system, so you can’t always get the exact appearance you’re wanting.
Made to Measure Roller Blinds
A made to measure blind gives you a bit more flexibility in that you can specify the size of the blind. These measurements are taken by the homeowner in most cases.
Made to measure blinds are what you usually purchase from some of the well known online retailers. Whilst you are likely to get a better fit, you take the responsibility and potential cost for getting the measurements wrong.
Made to measure blinds usually have a few more options when it comes to the fabric choice and the control type (e.g. chain, crank or battery motorised) but the final look is still limited by what the retailer offers as an off the shelf solution.
Bespoke & Custom-made Roller Blinds
A bespoke, or custom-made roller blind is one that has been professionally measured and manufactured to your exact size requirement and is usually installed by a professional blinds fitter. Manufacturers who offer bespoke systems usually have more options to customise your blind, with things like custom RAL coated hardware, hundreds of fabric options, different hembar finishes, multiple control type options and even completely bespoke systems in some cases.
The cost of a bespoke blind will seem high in comparison to a ready-made or made to measure blind, but this is because you’re not only paying for a finished product that is completely customised to you, but you’re also paying for the expert advice, guidance and workmanship that often comes with these products. A professional blind installer will not only be able to answer your questions but will also be able to offer suggestions and make sure that you are getting the right product and do not regret your purchase.
Due to the amount of variation in bespoke blinds, it’s hard to put an exact figure to the average cost, but we’ve put together some guide retail pricing for some of the most popular Umbra systems.
The following pricing is based on a 2m x 2m window size, which is a common size that we typically manufacture.
The motorised roller blind cost allows for a Somfy RTS motor, which is one of our most popular motors. The price may vary on motorised blinds depending on which motor you choose. Some are a lot more simple in their functionality, therefore the price is slightly lower, and some have a lot more features which are reflected in the cost.
As you can see, you would be paying approximately £300 more for a KuroLok fully cassetted zipped-edge blackout blind than you would for a Helios standard free-hanging roller blind, based on a similar specification. The benefit of the KuroLok system is that it gives you a full blackout look, has zip fabric retention technology in the side channels, and has a neat square cassette to hide the blind roller.
