How to Choose the Right Color When Buying Blinds
Choosing the right blinds for your windows is not only about the practical elements, like how much light it will block or how it’s fitted, it’s also about the design.
These days almost every shading system is customisable in some way, whether that’s the fabric, the hembar or the hardware colour.
Customising your blind hardware with colour is one of the easiest ways to create a stylish and discreet shading solution. The hardware colour can be matched to paint colours, decor or even a completely different colour to create a focal point.
With windows taking up so much of the wall and often being a feature of the room, it’s important to not overlook how much the look of your shading can have an impact on the overall aesthetic of the room.
The blind design, fabric style and blind colour can be customised to create a look that will fit any brief. Let’s take a look at how your blind colour can be customised to suit your needs.
Standard Colours
At Umbra our roller blinds are all available in white as standard, but each different blind system has its own alternative hardware colours too.
For example, our KuroLok and other cassette products are also available in black hardware for the same cost. Black hardware is often requested by clients wanting to create complete darkness in a room, e.g a home cinema. The black hardware will blend in seamlessly with black fabric when the lights are dimmed, creating a dark, immersive experience.
While it’s not factually true that black hardware will give you a better blackout than the same blind with white hardware, it can create a darker vibe for the room, which is sometimes enough to make you think the room is darker.

Custom RAL Hardware
If you’re looking for an even more custom option, consider getting your blind powder coated.
Powder coating is a dry coating process used as a metal finish, making it perfect for our aluminium-based roller blinds. Powder coating is applied as a dry powder through an electrostatic process, then cured with heat. It is well known for providing high-quality finishes in terms of both functionality and overall look.
The benefit of powder coating your hardware over using a standard colour is that you can match the colour to anything. In homes and hospitality, blinds are usually powder coated to match the wall paint or window frame colour, to create a subtle, discreet design.
But that’s not to say that’s the only purpose of powder coating. Occasionally we get requests for bold and bright colours where the client actually wants the blind to stand out. Doing this creates some interest in the room and can make the window a focal point, instead of blending into the background.
Whilst we normally get these requests from schools, social clubs and other public spaces, there’s no reason you can’t have a brightly coloured blind in your home. After all, home decor is all about creating a space that you enjoy living in – so why not be bold?
