How to Soundproof Bedrooms

Practical Steps to Soundproofing Bedrooms

When staying away from home, people often miss and crave their creature comforts; the homeliness of their bedroom, the softness of their own bed, the blissful silence helping them drift off to sleep. It is of little surprise that when sleeping in hotels, the public seek comfort over and above all else.

It may well be something that you take for granted, but if you’ve experienced sleeping in a comfortable, quiet and ambient hotel room with minimal distraction, chances are that it has been intelligently designed with your comfort in mind.

A good night’s sleep is scientifically proven to contribute towards good health. Perhaps this is why in a recent Trip Advisor study, 55% of travellers stated that they sought hotel reviews that specifically targeted sleep quality.

There are several things that a hotel can do to satisfy the needs of its guests, and sound proofing is a great way to start. Minimising sound needn’t compromise your design choices, and if done correctly your guests shouldn’t notice the actions you’ve taken to ensure them a good night’s sleep.

Noise Reduction Tips

You can start your noise reduction by subtlety incorporating soft furnishings into your design.

Hard objects create a louder vibration of sound within the bedroom, so for those in the hotel industry, this doesn’t bode well for guests as they’re likely to overhear sounds from passing cars, beeping horns, chatty passers-by, or noisy neighbours in adjoining rooms. For light sleepers, this can result in an uncomfortable night, and is likely to have a detrimental effect on their experience as a whole; the fastest route to a bad review!

Adding soft fabrics to absorb external sound will make a huge difference in noise control, and your guests will thank you for it.

Furniture Positioning

Carefully positioned furniture is also fantastic for reducing noise pollution. Heavy objects resist vibration which makes it harder for sound to be transmitted. By placing large pieces of furniture such as wardrobes or cupboards against the source of the noise i.e., adjoining rooms, a 60db conversation can be reduced significantly. This doesn’t require a tremendous outlay, just an intelligent design to ensure that furniture is placed in target areas.

Curtains and blinds are also ideal for absorbing sounds and can often be the first line of defence against unwanted external noise, with the additional benefit of creating a dark comforting environment conducive to a good night’s sleep. Many modern fabrics used in hotel blinds have been designed to reduce noise vibrations within a room and are intended to specifically to absorb soundwaves, as well as look fantastic.

Soundproofing blinds

It’s time to say goodbye to standard hotel blinds; well-fitted, specialist blinds play a huge part in soundproofing a room by providing an additional barrier at the key point of external noise – the window.

Our easy to-use range of blackout and soundproof blinds are ideal for a sometimes noisy, high-footfall hotel. Using smart sound barrier technology, the blinds have been specially created using high-density, acoustic materials to absorb higher frequency sounds.

In addition to tackling external noise (even through double glazing!), these soundproof qualities are coupled with blackout material to create a perfect environment for a great night’s sleep. At Umbra, we love a challenge, and can work with windows up to 24m², and are able to fit blinds to angled or shaped glazing.

Easy to install, low maintenance and available in a vast range of designs and blackout fabrics to complement your style and brand, with Umbra there is no need for compromise on style and luxury. All of our products are U.K. manufactured and come with long warranties.
