Building a hotel on the same street as the UK’s busiest train station in the centre of one of the world’s busiest cities is no mean feat. Aparthotel group Staycity chose the corner building of Liverpool Street & Middlesex Street as the new location for their latest addition to the Wilde collection of aparthotels.
Overview
Liverpool Street, London. This famous square of the Monopoly board is an iconic part of central London, home to the UK’s busiest train station bearing the same name.
Over 80 million entries and exists were made at Liverpool Street station in 2023, with the surrounding streets constantly flowing with foot traffic to-and-from its many local attractions, businesses and political institutions.
Aparthotel group Staycity chose the corner building of Liverpool Street & Middlesex Street as the new location for their latest addition to the Wilde collection of aparthotels.
Inspired by the life and works of Oscar Wilde, this collection of aparthotels is designed to give guests a mixture of quirky decor with modern, homely comforts to offer the ultimate in casual luxury, day in, day out.
Ensuring a consistent level of comfort and quality is a challenge enough for most hotels, especially one in the busiest part of London. Thankfully, Staycity has tackled this issue in the past with one of Umbra’s most popular products.
Design Challenge
Wilde Aparthotels are designed to cater for guests from a range of backgrounds and different countries on each continent around the world; with their bodies suffering from jetlag from the moment they land for up to several days.
The need for peace and nighttime ambience on demand is especially pertinent in this busy city centre location.
With Wilde’s design mission centring around ‘casual luxury’, the need for motorised blinds with simple controls is obvious. Simple controls help guests quickly understand how to operate the blinds without needing to study a remote control before use.
Hotel guests can often prove more demanding on furnishings than standard residential occupants. A robust system that prevents damage is essential.
Solution
Staycity has long used KuroLok blackout blinds in a number of their existing city-centre locations.
A combination of total light exclusion and sound-dampening creates a consistently quiet and peaceful space even in the busiest city centre locations.
The blackout aspect of KuroLok allows guests from all around the world to adjust their internal body clock and sleep peacefully no matter what the local time may be.
Motorisation adds a ‘cool factor’ and enhances the ‘penthouse’ experience even in these modestly priced rooms.
Selected rooms were fitted with KuroLok blackout blinds complete with a bottom angle to ensure total light exclusion.
Some rooms are fitted with Twin KuroLok systems for a dual screen/blackout solution for even better daylight control.
Obstacle detection motors prevent damage to the blinds and the zip-inserts prevent the fabric dislodging for the side channels.
The simple dry-contact switch makes for simple operation and beautiful integration with the lighting system.
